While emotions and anger are running high, they should avoid that line of argument completely.
What they should do right now is to say without any reservation (and without any implication that there might be even the tiniest justification), that "these attempts by fellow Muslims at targeting innocent British Citizens are completely unforgivable and unjustifiable. We may disagree with some of Britain's policies in the Middle East, but that bears no relation to these acts and does not justify in any way these acts." In other words, they should just be assuring everyone that they don't think these acts are justified (because there is tons of suspicion out there that they think they are justified - especially considering the poles everyone has seen).
Instead what they are saying is we don't like these acts, but what do you expect when Britain is acting this way in the Middle East? They are just reminding everyone that these evil vicious terrorists hold the same view of Britain’s policies as they themselves do, and that is the last thing they should be trying to do. They are also increasing the suspicion out there that they support these acts, or think they might be partially justified - which if they are trying to win hearts and minds, is the last thing they should do.
My guess is that most Britain’s think they should try and do the right thing in the Middle east, and they shouldn't be intimidated into doing the wrong thing. Tying these despicable acts to people who disagree with what Britain’s is doing, just gives more credence to what Britain is doing in the Middle East. They are going to make people think that if such evil people are against us, we must be doing the right thing. By saying Britain should stop doing what it is doing because innocent people in Britain might get killed will just backfire in their faces. Especially right after such an atrocious terrorist attempt was made.
They should be arguing (and not right now) even though these acts are awful, and Britain’s policies in the Middle East in no way justify these acts, we still think Britain’s polices are wrong and here is why. In other words, Britain should stop its current policies not because innocent people in Britain will die, but because they are wrong. Britain should always do the right thing, even in the face of evil but right now what Britian is doing is the wrong thing. But they shouldn't make such a statement at any time near one of these terrorist acts.
Isn't that obvious? Aren't they just hurting their own position and destroying their own credibility?
I think it's obvious that they agree that terrorist action are wrong, and I assume that they said as much. Indeed, I find it odd that you entertain the notion that they feel differently. Are you assuming that they have such odd views simply because they're Muslims?
