My best friend was so unhappily married only six months after the wedding that she broke out in hives that wouldn't go away. She and her husband didn't have sex on their wedding night because he called her a stupid bitch for misplacing the car keys at the wedding reception site, and they hardly had sex after they were married because he spent every evening locked up in his home office playing computer games. He fought with her all the time over money, even though they were living rent free in her grandmother's former house and were saving plenty. She told me that she wasn't in love with him, but got married to get out of her parents house, and that her two older brothers had both gotten married the previous year and she got caught up in the whole wedding frenzy, and her ex-boyfriend also got engaged and so she realized that door was shut.
I asked her why she didn't leave, and she said "Because I don't want to be 'divorced.' I'll be a 'divorcee.'" I replied that it was sexier than being blotchy.
She was raised Catholic and her mother was pretty controlling and judgmental (and so she probably said the word "divorce" as if it were "murder,") but that didn't stop my friend from losing her virginity at 15 or otherwise having premarital sex, using birth control, being pro-choice, and otherwise being a rebel. She's also an extremely intelligent woman, notwithstanding the mistake she made at 25, and a feminist. But the label of 'divorced' still struck her as a stigma. I just didn't get it and I chalked it up to not being Catholic.
By the way, she got over it and divorced him.
She has always had a lot of cats.
Divorcees are hot to trot. Didn't she watch Happy Days?
