I don't think he made the first conclusion you cite. I think he was trying to just compare having a wife to getting hookers for sex, but didn't have the guts to write it like the blunt locker room conversation in which it usually comes up. He chickenshitted into a stupid discussion of market forces.
This seems to be a trend. A lot of writers these days posture their observations as ruminations on the effect of market forces. This allows the reader to avoid the consideration of the real issue, which is that people do rotten shit for selish reasons all the time. I'm a fan of the market, but I hate this "the market made me do it" crap.
