There are few manufacturers of automobiles that I would seriously consider taking off road. Rover and Jeep and maybe, maybe Toyota.
That said, you are right in that the suburbanite knuckleheads don't know what the fuck they have. Back when the Range Rover was (re-?)introduced in the US in the late 80s, early 90s a friend of ours brought hers to our ranch. She was afraid to drive it over a muddy patch of the pasture for fear that it might get stuck. No amount of proof could convince her that she had the best possible vehicle for getting through. I still think she just didn't want to get mud on her expensive car.
And the Discovery was a disaster of epic proportions. Not quite Aztec, but pretty fucking bad.
