Cooking odors never bothered me in my old house because the kitchen was set back, but in my new house the stove is quite near the stairway and odors travel right up the stairs to the bedroom and linger. I place the vinegar bowl between the stove and the stairway and it's amazing.
By the way, I hate the stupid kitchen design that puts the sink underneath the window on an exterior wall but the range on an interior wall such that the vent is nearly useless.

My mother's kitchen is designed so one cannot stand at the sink while the dishwasher is open, meaning you have to rinse off the plates, move aside, open the dishwasher, reach over the door and put the plates inside.
