Because everyone understand that Bledsoe was only getting $15M in the fifth year because it wasn't guaranteed. Which is to say that NFL contracts are full of fake money at the end of the contract. Unlike MLB, where -- e.g. -- the money owed to Johnny Damon in the last year of his contract is going to have to be paid, whether or not he's still producing at the same level. (Just to take another Boston player who can no longer throw as well as he once could.)

Which is to say that if Bledsoe's contract were guaranteed, he'd be making a lot less. And the teams would be paying more players -- those that can play and those who became injured and now can't. The payroll is just as large, but it's spread across more people.
