I don't know if Marshall Field's had previously become part of one of the department store behemoths, but our local store that just became a Macy's (Meier & Frank) had been a May store. Back in the day when it was independent, M&F was pretty cool, but under May it became total CRAP. The Macy's store brands are better than the May store brands (especially when it comes to housewares--I have some items from the Herald Square Cellar that are going strong 10 years after leaving NYC), so I'll probably be heading back at least to check it out.
I do semi-regularly shop at Nordstrom, and when I was working next door I'd pop into Saks to peruse the sale racks (they marked things down further than Nordstrom did before sending them off to Off Fifth v. The Rack).
