I believe I spent a delightful night at the
Best Western in Pismo Beach about exactly a year ago. The shore is pretty steep right there, but the hotel is right above the water.
You may be looking for something classier than a Best Western, but it usually works for me.
eta: There are two Best Westerns in Pismo Beach, and I may have been at the other one, the Shelter Cove Lodge.
