When I was a kid, I had a half-Great Dane, half-Doberman named Jessica. She used to accompany me every day on my paper route. She was a friendly dog and everyone in the neighborhood loved her. The paper route was clearly the highlight of her day. As soon as I started getting ready to go, she'd start bouncing up and down, wagging her stumpy little tail, and howling with her mouth formed in perfect little "O." She really was a little boy's best friend.

As I got older, I became busy with sports and school activities and no longer had time for a paper route. Jessica's eye would still light up in anticipation every time I put my jacket on, only to be disappointed when I told her she couldn't come along. Eventually she developed arthritis in her hip and could no longer stand up. We put her to sleep.
