The dirtier it is, the better it "holds". There is a point at which even I can't stand it, so then it's time to break down and open up the shampoo bottle.
My previous hairdresser recommended this regime and I tried it for about 6 months. Not only did my hair smell dirty (at least to me) but it actually got drier. It was oily on my scalp and drier on the ends.

Then I changed hairdressers. Now I use a shampoo for dry hair and a heavy duty conditioner. I use Kerastase products, which is a L'Oreal line. I only get my hair cut about twice a year but when I do, I also get a "gloss." It's some kind of salon-only deep conditioner. There is an option to get a tint, if one is so inclined.

I think the factor not being considered in this conversation is water. My place seems to have extremely hard water which is in turn hard on my hair.

PPNYC, another thing to try is using Neutrogena for 2 weeks and then go back to the tired products. Or use the Neutrogena once a week on a regular basis.

For those who will moan about a long, boring post about hair products, I give you U2's new Penis Building:
