You get what you perceive as pile-ons because you talk about what X posted in response to what you posted which was just a reference to what you posted before you posted the thing that you posted that set off X in the first place. So you contribute to your own pile-on. If you would stop talking about what you posted and how people reacted to it and how you counterreacted, you would get a lot less crap.
So, interestingly enough, if you were to stop digging so many holes, people would stop piling on to fill them in.
