I thought the ruling was that gay couples have to have the same "rights", but the majority left it to the legislature to decide whether that would be called a marriage or a civil union or something else.

I found it interesting that the decision is unanimous. My understanding is that New Jersey has a long tradition of attempting to balance its Supreme Court, so that if a judge of a R background retires, a D governor will appoint an R replacement.
