Of the six currently living vets (including currently serving personnel) in my family, there is one staunch republican, three staunch Dems, and two swing voters, both of whom are voting Dem this year.
There are a lot of folks in the military who may vote R because the Rs have in the past been viewed as stronger on defense, but they'll support Democratic positions on civil rights, economic opportunity, and social issues. Colin Powell is a good example of someone coming out of the military who isn't going to agree with the likes of Cheney and Rumsfeld on a lot of issues.

I can tell you that for someone who is active in the Republican party, Veterans is one of our strongest voting blocks. We always target them, and in this race the RNC has assumed that most of them are with the President. They are saturating Vets with mailers encouraging them to vote, and I can't believe they would do this unless they were sure most were going to vote R in this election.
You can accuse Karl Rove of many things, but not of being stupid and you can be assured he has done his homework. He is doing everything in his power to get the vets to vote and Kerry just helped him immensely.
