I am not a Tom Wolfe fan, but I think I did read Bonfire of the Vanities, but it was a really long time ago and I was quite young and I don't remember this phrase. I will google it or whatever.
I thought it might be a consciously dangerous activity that old ladies indulge in -- like the AARP version of elevator surfing.
