Here is what he should have said: "First of all, I have no excuses for my actions last night. I am looking deep inside myself to find out where something like that could have come from. Needless to say, this will be a long, personal process for me and I plan on taking every step I need to take to uncover the flaws in myself that led me to even think, let alone utter the vile, disgusting things I said.
At this point in that process, I can tell you that I have a problem with rage and have been struggling to find myself professionally as well as personally after the tremendous success of Seinfeld. It has been hard. The heckler I confronted last night struck a nerve when they said I was not funny. Please keep in mind that I am not presenting an excuse, but an explanation for my outburst. Although I like to think of myself as a professional who can deal with these situations, which are common in stand-up, I was furious. And since
I
was hurt on a deep level, I wanted to strike back at this person in the most hurtful way I could think of. I did that and again, there is no excuse for my actions.
I want to apologize directly to him, everyone at the club that night and everyone in this country. What I did was small minded, stupid and let's face it, racist. I do not believe I am a racist person, but after stepping back and looking at what I said, I need to rethink who I am. And that will be part of this process of introspection I am undertaking. Once again, I am sorry from the bottom of my heart."

The sentiment is good, but it's a little long and I think you'll lose the audience. Throw in a couple of jokes to punch it up a little.
