And, as a person who is sometimes on a break with Penske, yes, under his definition, you can declare it unilaterally. I think you need to let the other person know, though. And probably why. (e.g., I went on a break with him over the stuff he posts on the PB.)
I think he is on a break from the boards. An unannounced one. But to me, breaks from the board are different from breaks from a person.
I am on a break from interacting directly with coworkers.

OK, I forgot that since I'm on a break from interacting with my coworkers, I have easy IM access. You should (out of courtesy) tell the person that you are on a break, but you need not tell them why.
