I think it's probably a safer bet to do that for a kid's 16th birthday. I had a few classmates that got cars for their birthdays. I don't think that they were particularly picky about model/color/option.

Alas, such a thing did not happen to me. I got a 1982 Saab 900 a few months after I got my license. My dad helped me pay the $3500 price in exchange for a contract signed in blood that said I'd carpool all of my siblings wherever they needed to go. First day I brought it home, it broke down. Gas guage, it turns out, didn't work properly. Over the two years I had that car, the only thing that didn't need to be replaced was the seat warmers.
