I'm not familiar with this David Rothkopf guy, but he's written an op-ed in today's
WaPo on Iraq, the Middle East and US foreign policy in the region (past and present) that is long, insightful, depressing, and sounds about right. I recommend it.
It advocates neither cutting and running nor bombing Tehran into glass, though, so YMMV.
