What I hate are those people who take the outside seat on the bus (in the two-seater configuration) and then act all pissy if you want the inside seat. I make it a point of asking for the inside seat when someone is doing that. Even if there are outer seats available.

What's the rule on giving up a train seat where you have the outside seat in a 3 person seat and there's an open seat between you and the guy with the window seat? I always get up and offer the person the middle seat. Most people are happy to take that, recognizing that one of the downsides of living closer to the city than the people who got on the train before you is that you get lousy train seats. Some others seem to think they're entitled to move me to the middle seat. They give me stares when I get up to give them the seat.
What is the polite behavior in this circumstance (for both parties)?
