That guy is a royal dick. He stares at the briefcase, pretending to be reading something, hoping you'll pass.
I'll usually stand if I have to sit next to someone and standing is an option. I like to spread out and read the paper. I can do that standing, which suits me just as well.
Being seated next to an obscenely hot woman's only happened to me a couple times. One was this real cute chick who takes the train from my station. Some fat guy jammed her right next to me. I felt like I was in 7th grade again, sitting next to a girl I had a crush on.
She probably didn't.
