ETA: We bought last year a Toshiba upconverter DVD player - hooked to 54" 1080p DLP set via HDMI connector - and discs look just dandy.
And it cost about $100, as opposed to $400.
When a substantial number of DVDs are released in Blu or HD (and I mean good films, like "Lawrence OA", not "Superman Returns", then maybe I'll consider upgrading again

We just unhooked our DVD player (about 10 years old) and hooked up an XBox 360 in its place. I haven't watched any movies on it yet though. I watch most movies after DVRing them anyway these days (and we have a HD DVR). I'm too cheap to buy or rent them.
