I prefer fiction mysteries and thrillers

Try "Monkeewrench" by PJ Tracy. Set in Minneapolis & rural Wisconsin. Fun set of characters. If you like it, there are 3 more so far in the series. Definitely start with Monkeewrench because the author doesn't do a lot of re-treading in the subsequent books to explain why the characters act the way they do.
They're kind of gimicky but I really like Diane Mott Davidson's books. They have recipes in them (the main character is a caterer) so that explains my fondness.
I enjoy legal thrillers (have to pretend at least someone has thrills in their work): the Butch Karp series by Robert Tanenbaum, Nina Reilly series by Perri O'Shaunessey, Ben Kincaid & Christina McCall series by William Bernhardt, Paul Madriani series by Steve Martini, Jake Lassiter series and Solomon v. Lord series by Paul Levine.
And in a genre more like Kathy Reich's books, the Kay Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell.
I read so much frivolous fluff it's scary.
