I believe you're thinking of the Braves. And I don't know why you think anyone thinks of the Yankees as America's team. Everyone outside of New York hates them and everyone in NY doesn't want to share. Outside of the country, they are recognized only because (i) of past success, (ii) Babe Ruth and (iii) the uniform.
