I still have a tape from college made for me by the crazy guy in my freshman dorm who believed my roommate was Satan and was found in some other girl's bed with a knife in his hand, after he'd stayed awake for a week trying to get into a fraternity. He titled the tape, "Quoique vous faissiez, ecrasez l'infame," which is a quote from Voltaire suggesting crushing the Church/superstition*, and which he later claimed to me he picked at random (not being a French-speaker and knowing I was), nevermind that one of the songs on the tape was "The Devil Inside."


*Per some website, Voltaire’s targets, his recent biographer Ian Davidson writes, “included superstition, theological repression, Jesuits, monks, fanatical regicides, and the Inquisition in every shape and form; in short, all facets of the dark and regressive alliance between the Catholic Church and the French State.”

I still have (somewhere) a poem written to me by a boy named Larry my freshman year of college that contains the line "do your deep orange eyes show the soul of a child or do they reveal a glimpse of a mind too wild?"

I must have roughly one jillion mix tapes.
