I'd say their duties had contracted until Iraq came along. In the War of 1812, for example, the militias fought most of the war, even our half-hearted attempts to invade Canada and take the war to foreign soil. They weren't just defensive. The founders would probably be pretty comfortable with sending the guard to Iraq.
