Some people (mainly the secretary that sits outside my office, but others as well) refer to others as living "on" Staten Island. I assumed they use that phrasing because Staten Island is an island, and they like to think of people living on, rather than in, an island. However, these same people also refer to people living "in" Manhattan. No one talks about living "on" Manhattan, although it, too, is an island.

With the exception of Spalding Grey, people don't think of Manhattan as a small island off the coast of North America. And he's dead.
