In general, when I've heard news on the radio, I'm much more likely to remember where I was. E.g., I remember hearing about the coup in the former Soviet Union in 1991 (?).

I remember things when I'm abroad. I was living in Spain during Tiennaman Square and I was living in England when the Oklahoma City bombing took place.
