I didn't know the name for them either, until I started looking for them.
They're stakes that you put in the ground around plantings so that when you drag the hose around your yard to water, the hose doesn't steamroller your plantings.
The hose constantly gets into the boxwoods when I'm watering the container plants. You wouldn't thing this would be such a big deal.
