Then again, I don't think I'll find my own teenagers (when they are teenagers) annoying, but if they are the annoying, sullen "too cool for everyone" types, I live in the prep school capital of the world, and off they go. But I really don't think I could stand to send them away to boarding school. If I do, it will be to a boarding school within 10 miles of my house.

I went to a school about 26 miles from your house (or, at least, from your local diner, not knowing where your house is) - and about the same distance from my own. 10 miles may be too close, for all concerned.
