It's not carbs. It's calories. Carbs happen to have a lot of quick and easy calories, so you can't eat as many of them if you're trying to lose or maintain weight, but there's nothing wrong with eating pasta or sugar or bread so long as you don't go overboard with them.
And the formula of figuring out calories in and calories out really easy, but the execution can be damned difficult. It's not a walk in the park, and most people fail at it.
