One thing I forgot to mention, and then I'll drop the whole long commute thing. People who live in Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn have a close to or 2 hour commute--due to the traffic patterns. And that's close to the city. Certain parts of Jersey and CT and the farther you get out on the Island, 2 hours. My prior commute from Rockland [when we lived there for a short while] because it is the other side of the river [rockland county is much much closer] was close to 1 hour 1/2 due to the logistics of the ferry to the train. So it's not as simple as moving closer, or making the short commute a priority. Sometimes you can live close and have a very long commute.
