On the first sentence, I don't think we here have enough information to judge, and wouldn't use that term in any event. Surely that is a subject open to debate.
On the second point, I agree with your criticism of Thaddeus' characterization of the "far left" -- at least in the implication that it represents any politically significant number or force.
