I just learned today that my longtime membership in AAA has been funding not just ready-when-you-need-it-towing, but also
lobbying in Washington for pro-car positions, including opposition to the strengthening of the Clean Air Act in 1990, improvements to fuel economy standards, funding of public transportation, and urban planning measures to limit sprawl.
The Sierra Club is pissed and so am I --- I had no idea they had a political agenda they were funding with my dues.
Fortunately, there's
a competitor founded by a former president of Working Assets that provides basically the same service at the same price, but without the legislative lobbying on my "behalf" as a car owner. The company donates 1% of revenues to environmental clean-up programs, offers eco-friendly travel alternatives and even takes steps to offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with travel.
Anyhoo, I don't own any stock and am not a shill for the BWC --- I'm just so pissed at AAA that I thought I'd mention it in
every conversation I have this weekend. You're the first.
