I've believed this to be an essential truth since I was about 14. I remember saying in freshman math that if you go far enough to the right, you end up on the left, and vice versa.
How else do we end up with "communist dictatorships", "marxist dictatorships" etc. To revisit our old swearing match, my core belief regarding marxists of the soviet sort, is that it is a life or death question whether to acquiesce to their demands. I understand that we disagree about whether what happened was justified in many/most cases, but my belief is exactly why I belief
their tactics must be adopted to fight them. The ideology of promising 51% of the populace that they can blindly steal from the other 49%, that they can violently oppress the other 49%, is so repugnant to me, that I support violently oppressing those who ardently advocate such views. At least, at such time as they are an actual threat to the power structure.
But, other than that, isn't the essential disagreement usually just whether our government has a legitimate interest in taking the actions it does? If the "right" is just a grey area to the right of the "left", I'd say the color of belief of the right is that our government has no legitimate interest in doing many things its already doing. The left would say it has legitimate interests in doing more. Just generically speaking of course.
