DBC Pierre won the Booker Prize for
Vernon God Little
The book is "a satirical novel about guilt and redemption set in Texas. "Vernon God Little," whose protagonist is a 15-year-old accused of a Columbine-style massacre at his high school, is the first novel by Mr. Pierre, 42. John Carey, chairman of the judges' panel, described it as "a coruscating black comedy reflecting our alarm but also our fascination with modern America."
The shortlist included: "Notes on a Scandal," by Zoë Heller; "Brick Lane," by Monica Ali; "Oryx and Crake," by Margaret Atwood; "Astonishing Splashes of Color," by Clare Morrall; and "The Good Doctor," by Damon Galgut.
