Yes, shelters and humane society's are the way to go. The critters are already screened for behavor and health problems, they are MUCH cheaper than a breeder, and you will be saving a life. Besides with a mixed breed you get a healthier animal. Take a look at an AKC pedigree, they are scary. Pure-breed AKC dogs tend to be bred for looks (conformation) alone. They compete in beauty contests. Yes they have Obedience and Agility trials but the money and prestige is in Conformation shows like Westminster.
My dog is a mutt but she does have her CGC.
