Nevertheless, I must tout eBay as a pretty good place to get jewelry. There is a ton of absolute crap, but you are much less likely to get screwed on mid-range stuff than you are by your local jewelry shop with its 100%+ bullshit markup. If you know what to look for (or spend a bit of time to learn about it), and/or are willing to take a gamble on occasion, you can do very well. (The general eBay warning "don't spend more than you are willing to lose" is, as ever, sound.) You've got to have patience and can't feel any pressure to actually get something (have an anniversary deadline looming or look for something very specific for someone's birthday, etc., and you are setting yourself up to get screwed), but if you hang about and keep an eye on what is there you can do well. (Special mention for buying appraised loose stones and getting them set yourself.) I've had stuff appraised for 10X what I paid.
