When I was around 7, I got a book for Christmas called
The Beauty of Birth which glossed over how the sperm met up with the egg but got the basic idea across.
When I was around 12, I found a copy of
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex But Were Afraid to Ask in the attic. At some point, my mother discovered it in my possession. She told me I could keep it and read it but I couldn't show my friends because their parents likely would not be as accepting of our curiosity.
Hats off to Mom for being so cool about this (even though she spent the next several years confiscating all my makeup)!
