My understanding is that a regular HDTV-ready digital cable box will act as a tuner (I don't have HDTV, do have digital cable - interestingly*, when I tune into the digital channels on my box, I get digital sound but no picture, which makes some sense because I run the sound directly from the box to the stereo, but my TV's not compatible, but I digress). Comcast hits me for a small rental fee (<$5) each month for the box over the cost of digital cable, and apparently I could buy one, but I've never looked into it.

I was talking satellite HDTV receivers. You're talking about cable HDTV. As I understand it, the cost for the HDTV box for cable isn't much.

In addition to. It has a little sensor that fits over the laser sensor on the cable box which changes the channels. There's a small delay, which is a pain in the ass, but you get used to it.
