Few people in the teeming masses know (or care) who the hell Roman Polanski even is.
Most do know The Gloved One, and therefore his supremely bizarre behavior attracts the moths to this particular flame.
And, FWIW, I don't know if he's "hated." I don't hate him, I just think he's evolved into one weird fucker for about 20 different reasons. He's become so removed from the reality that we know that it's difficult to relate to him at all. It's like he's a space alien or something.
