Frankly, I like the sound of this. Bare desperation is best accompanied by good drugs. At least then, the desperation doesn't seem so stark. A good high can cover many sins.
(But, more to my point, I'm betting that, parental attention or not, you rode in nice vehicles, and wore new, trendy jackets yearly. Back then, at least.)
