Look at this here post. At the bottom, there's a button marked "PM." If you click on that button, you will be taken to a screen where you can send a message that will go to me, reptile to reptile, and to no one else. It is a so-called Private Message. You can also access your PM in-box through the "User CP" button to the top of the screen.
Some people have set up their account so that they cannot receive PMs. These people are very silly, except Penske, who is an unappreciated genius. You can also select different ways to be notified of a new PM -- I recommend a separate pop-up window.
