It was a decent article, but I’m puzzled as to how you reached that takeaway.
I think the new nationalism appeals to be people who’d lose out in broader multinational coalitions and expanded trade groups. They’re trying to hold onto their market share. Kind of like companies in areas that are seeing growth and competition from outside. Lots of second rate cities in Rust Belt have this issue. The locals try to protect their captured markets. This is why so many train lines lie dormant in places like Pennsylvania. Locals with businesses sometimes benefit by keeping things insular, incestuous.
