Agreed. I follow a similar protocol as you. I wear gaiters all the time outside anyway just because it’s freezing here most of the year. I read that same CDC article you linked, and started to fold the gaiter over to create a double layer when I have to be close to people outside or need to pop inside for a minute. I need to up my indoor mask game — I just use a cloth mask for shopping, etc. My family is double masking, although the N95 alone seems to be sufficient.

My indoor (shopping) default is cloth over KN95, new since the easier-spreading variants. I haven't had to do so yet, but for longer indoor sessions or around higher risk people (e.g., health care setting), I'll use an N95, maybe with the clothe too.
But we're done to just me and my BIL among close family that hasn't either had a jab or have one scheduled, so things are looking up.
