I got pretty ill last August. (I try to keep distance, but it's getting difficult as things are opening up and people becoming lax.)

However, the gaiter has only been washed maybe 4 or 5 times since last summer, so the natural oils and whatever other fiber congealing agents exit my mouth regularly might be making that filthy old gaiter into a near impermeable wall.

You should look up the word “asymptomatic.”
