I got the impression he was terrified early on of the free fall of the stock market right about a year ago with the initial lockdowns, and he wanted people out and about spending money and working. So he downplayed it even more than he had in January / February, right around the time the CDC/Fauci etc. were sending the "wear a mask" message, which as Less has pointed out, was delayed and initially confused due to wanting to preserve N95s for healthcare. (I was part of the hunt for PPE in that stage, it was absolutely insane, and it cost an obscene amount of money that could have better been spent on patient care. And I'll forever loathe the administration for not getting that shit dealt with early on. Harbinger of things to come, etc.)

I also got the impression that he thrives on chaos and division, and the country INITIALLY was acting pretty united on how to handle this thing. Real easy wedge issue, especially when he personally hated wearing them because he thought they made him look weak.


BTW, our mask mandate ended a week ago today, and I haven't seen that many people without in the grocery stores, garden stores, or even the goddamned Tractor Supply in Crosby. We're close to last in vaccination rates, but apparently we're not entirely stupid.
