You're really just doing a mild brick, like when people train for triathlons. You're probably not going to be as fast on the bike though. When I was training for a 1/2 Ironman (many moons ago), I did bricks all of the time. My times for the second exercise were always slower than when I did them independently.
I do think that doing them back to back is likely more beneficial.

I'll occasionally break it up if my schedule only allows for brief intervals of exercise. Do 500 calories rowing, then 250 bike or elliptical, or v/v. Sometimes it'll be broken up, sometimes in immediate succession.
YMMV, but doing a full 50-60 minutes on rowing machine feels like most effective workout. Put Bill Maher or Fareed Zakaria on, hit "cardio high" about 25 minutes in, after which one feels no pain, then go thru end of show. Feel wrecked afterward, but in the best way.
