I am sorry the concept of a firm having emails monitored and/or private investigators, strikes me that the firm managment is way too paranoid and is out of control. Or in "the whole truth" way too thin skinned. Also when something is way too outrageous, it quite often gets "called out" and eventually someone will have to put up or shut up.
