Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums

Yeah, I know that the Board has moved on to discussing baseball and flame wars and all sorts of interesting topics, but I had to comment on what a crappy list this was.

Sidd already mentioned that you should just leave jazz albums to a separate list if you're going to shortchange them. Kind of Blue not in the top 10? John Coltrane ranked #102 with the Zombies over 20 places ahead at #80?! The Zombies. Think about that for a second.

Here are some pairings that show how flawed the list is:

#58 Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart is better than
#72 Purple Rain
#89 Dusty in Memphis
#100 In the Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra

#103 Sweet Baby James by James Taylor is better than
every rap album except P.E.'s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
any R.E.M. album

#180 The Definitive Collection by Abba is better than
#197 Murmur by R.E.M.
#245 Bryter Later by Nick Drake
#358 Singles Going Steady by the Buzzcocks (twice as good!)

#200 The Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails is better than
#346 Three Feet High and Rising by De La Soul (#346!)
#303 Grace by Jeff Buckley
#454 Getz/Giberto

And, look who placed ahead of Radio City by Big Star (#403):
#384 Pyromania by Def Leppard
#396 Eliminator by ZZ Top
#363 Ray of Light by Madonna
#367 Is This It? by The Strokes
#67 The Stranger by Billy Joel

Cette liste, elle est merde.
