It's those of you who live in appallingly variable climates who need wind chill to exagerate just how bad it was out there. When we Northern Californians talk to each other, we can just say, "it was below 50 out there," or, "it was above 75," and the rest of us wince in sympathy.

I agree that wind chill can seem a little silly at times. "It is 23 degrees with a wind chill factor of negative 158." But generally, the wind chill factor can provide some very helpful information. For example: Zero degrees on a windless day = not a bad day for outdoor activities. Zero degrees with a wind chill of negative 50 = a day where, if you are not careful when you go outside, you will die.
